Technically, those three words could be aligned into a 3x2 factorial design, but I prefer to think of them as a 2x2 factorial, which would of course results in the following four possibilities:
a) Rights with labels (++);
b) Rights without labels (+-):
c) No rights with labels; or (-+)
d) No rights without labels (--).
In conceptualizing RWOL, most of us center in on the powerful term, "labels." But it's important not to forget the other all-important term, "rights."
Whether they are educational rights or civil rights, RWOL wants to provide them and protect them.
So let's rule out c and d as any kind of a viable option because in our model, we want student rights and powerful and appropriate education. Everyone would agree with that, right?
That leaves us with a choice between a and b. We want to provide educational rights, but do we want to label or not?
Our present system is a "Rights With Labels" system, for example, "We'll protect your rights, but only if we can call you LD!"
Take a little time and ask yourself how well that paradigm is working for our students.
RWOL proposes b: rights without labels (+-). It's pretty much that straightfoward.
